To read an electrical panel, start by locating the breaker box—a gray metal box typically mounted in areas like the utility room, garage, basement, laundry room, or closet. Open the panel to reveal two columns of switches, each controlling power to a specific circuit in your home. Ideally, these circuits will be labeled next to the switches or on a numbered list inside the panel door. If they are not labeled, you can identify them by turning off all the breakers except one. Then, check which lights and outlets remain powered to determine the corresponding circuit. Once identified, label the switch accordingly and repeat the process for each breaker to simplify future troubleshooting of tripped circuits.
